At Arlington Smile Center, I have always seen kids starting at age 2, but now thanks to a new field I stumbled upon, Orofacial Myology, I have decided to schedule newborn visits as soon as parents want to bring in their baby. I feel it is imperative to teach parents the right habits from the beginning and hopefully correct bad habits before they even start.
Tips and tricks to try our best to prevent Malocclusion. For example, tricks to avoid pacifiers, the correct bottles and sippy cups to use, the best way to nurse to promote healthy nasal breathing and gently closing the babies mouth when it is open every chance you get.
I realize I can’t do actual myotherapy activities and training with children under the age of 4 but I feel their are certain things we can start coaching parents on to hopefully prevent the need for actual myotherapy all together.
Below are example of SPILL PROOF sippy cups (ie. WOW cups, munchkin 360 cups). At Arlington Smile Center we highly recommend you give your children one of these options instead of all the other sippy cups out on the market. We don't recommened that kids put anything between their palate and tongue.... like the older sippy cups that have been used for years.
We don't want anything between the palate and the tongue, so the tongue learns to live in the palate where it belongs.
Below are examples of items that the babies can put in their mouth and chomp on that can help work the jaw muscles. Plus, the little munchkin type pacifier that you can put hard foods inside.
Children are not eating hard enough foods to work their mouth muscles, their jaw can't get strong if it doesn't exercise.
